HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY
This therapy was the main reason the Centre was started in 1985, a therapy which was not available anywhere else for M.S. sufferers. We have a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, which can accommodate 5 people and is operated most days, including Saturday mornings, (check for availability).
Oxygen is the healing element in the atmosphere and by breathing 100% oxygen under pressure this allows extra oxygen to be absorbed into the tissue, which repairs the damaged tissue before it becomes scarred. It is the scar tissue, which prevents messages getting from the brain to the limbs etc. causing disability.
The therapy involves sitting in a comfortable chamber which is pressurised (very much like sitting in an aircraft). A small mask or mouthpiece is then worn to receive the oxygen. It is necessary to receive 20 one-hour sessions over a four week period initially and thereafter top-up sessions, recommended once a week. You will be asked to wear clothing made of 50% natural fibre, cotton wool or viscose and instruction will be given to show you how to clear your ears whilst the chamber is being pressurised.
This is not a treatment that requires medical supervision, all operators of the chambers are volunteers and receive thorough training and are examined. Essential retraining workshops are regularly conducted.
